Planting Seeds and Transplanting Ideas
The Markham Garden and Horticultural Society (MGHS also known as the Markham Garden Club) is a vibrant community that brings gardening enthusiasts together through engaging speaker events and social gatherings. Whether your garden is in your backyard, on your balcony, or part of a community space, all you need is a love for plants and the opportunity to get involved.
We meet at the Markham Village Arena and Community Centre, 6041Highway 7 East, (at Hwy 48 and Hwy 7). The meetings take place on the 4th Monday of each month, except for December, January and July.
At each meeting, we have a keynote speaker. Our May to September meetings include flower design and horticultural shows; in November, we feature a special Christmas floral design demonstration. In addition, we have an opportunity to attend our District 5 AGM with other Societies. Members are invited to visit any of the District 5 societies. A nominal fee may apply.
We hope we've sparked your curiosity and inspired you to join us at an upcoming Markham Garden Club meeting or event. It's a fantastic opportunity to deepen your gardening knowledge, exchange ideas, and connect with fellow plant lovers.
The Markham Garden Club was founded in 1920 with an enthusiastic group of 58 members. In its early years, MGHS sponsored a trial rose garden featuring bushes sourced from California, Ireland, Great Britain and Canada. The trial garden was at the corner of Parkway and George Street.
MGHS temporarily disbanded in 1941 due to WWII, but was reorganized 10 years later. At that time, MGHS had increased its membership to 114 gardeners. In 2020, MGHS celebrated its 100th anniversary.
MGHS is a member of the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA), an umbrella organization for approximately 282 horticultural societies. The OHA is divided into 19 districts, and MGHS is part of District 5. District 5 covers a large area from Lake Simcoe in the north to Lake Ontario in the south.
